The Toledo Federation of Teachers, Local 250 of the American Federation of Teachers, is celebrating 90 years of service to the Toledo Community. This year marks the historic anniversary of the signing of its charter on February 11, 1933, establishing it as one of Toledo’s great unions.
Raymond Lowry became the first president (1933-34). Following presidents were: Harry D. Lamb (1935), Edward Packer (1936-37), E.B.Featherstone (1938), Russell Brown (1939-40), Robert Romberger (1941), Ora Apple (1942), Carl Benson (1943-46; 1957-58), George Hammersmith (1947-48), Dorothy Matheny (1949-52), Sylvia Solomon (1935-56), William M. Hawk (1959-60), Richard Bucholz (1961), Richard Smith (1962), Kenneth Ward (1963-4/30/1964), Joseph B. Dence (4/30/1964-12/31/1966), Dal Lawrence (1966-1996), Francine Lawrence (1996-2011), Kevin Dalton (2011- present).
In March of 1933, The Toledo Federation of Teachers affliated with the Ohio State Federation Labor and also sent delegates to the Toledo Central Labor Union.
TFT is and always has been committed to supporting members in the classroom and out in the community.
TFT leadership, along with the collective voice of its members, has successfully advocated for better working and learning conditions in our Toledo schools, positively impacting the students and families that are served by the Toledo Public Schools.
The Toledo Federation of Teachers actively participated in the Toledo Central Labor Union. TFT supports other local unions and in turn are supported by them.
Toledo Federation of Teachers, Local 250 members consists of teachers, nurses, paraprofessionals, and substitutes and has served the Toledo community for 90 years as a chartered union.
In addition to improving the lives of students and families in the Toledo community, TFT members promote the development of community leaders, positive role models, opportunities for fellowship, personal growth, professional development and community service.
The service provided by the Toledo Federation of Teachers will continue to have a positive and enduring impact on our Toledo community and citizens, striving to be a beacon of change and hope. Each member represents a call to action for a purpose, to achieve something greater than what individuals can accomplish alone.
Through its legacy and leadership roles, Toledo Federation of Teachers have earned respect in their professional roles, provide unique professional opportunities, and enjoy professional credibility.
